On Wednesday, May 12th 2004, representatives of Canadian
and Israeli defence companies
successfully concluded a one-day partnering event in Ottawa. The Canadian
Defence Industries Association (CDIA) sponsored and hosted the event. The partnering day allowed participants to explore opportunities in
establishing joint ventures in research, development and marketing around the
world in addition to doing business in Israel and in Canada. It also provided
an opportunity for Israeli companies to showcase their longstanding experience
in the realm of public safety while the Canadian defence and security
industries demonstrated their solid technological capabilities. Holocaust Remembrance
, April 19th In the Shadow of Death
follows the story of the Elsner family of Stuttgart from the nineteen
thirties, as the Holocaust evolves from the disturbing new policies of the
Third Reich, through the horrifying attempt to annihilate an entire
race. Puddle’s non-Jewish, volunteer cast brilliantly realizes the
deeply sensitive and personal story that binds Puddle’s work, and teaches
about the corrosive effect that racism and hatred has on humanity. The play was brought
to Ottawa and staged before an audience of Canadian schools and the general
public, in a joint effort of the Embassy of Israel and the Ottawa inter-faith
dialogue with the support of: Most Rev. Marcel
Gervais of the Archdiocese of Ottawa, the Right Rev. Peter R. Coffin, Bishop

Establishment of Joint Ontario and
Israel R&D Fund We met with the directorate of the
Ontario Ministry of Industry and Trade on May 7th in order to
advance the idea of establishing a joint R&D Fund, first broached by
Industry and Trade Minister Ehud Olmert when he met with the Premier of
Ontario last November.
Participants in our meeting included the Deputy Directors of Industry
and Trade of the Ontario Ministry of Industry and Trade and their assistants
as well as the President of CIIRDF Dr. Henry Rothschild and Mr. Gabi Regev. Our hosts were indeed interested
in the idea of a joint R&D Fund but have budgetary limitations for the
current year. It was agreed to
establish the Fund this year with the initial funding of projects to begin in
2005. We will prepare a draft agreement
for the establishment of the Fund (on the basis of the CIIRDF Agreement) and
pass it on to the Foreign Trade Authority in order to do the staff work
necessary before we present it to the Ontario Industry and Trade Ministry for their
approval. Israeli Products Fair in Toronto

with Canadian volunteers
Sandra and myself met with seven
Canadian Jews who have volunteered to help Israeli companies penetrate the
Canadian market, each in his area of expertise. This was in the framework of the “Shaking Hands” project
initiated by the Chamber of Commerce.
I informed them about our goals.
This was followed by a comprehensive discussion about the ability of
volunteers to help Israeli business, voluntarily or for a fee. Meeting with Canadian-Israeli Businessmen
David Harnik, the Jewish National Fund
representative in Montreal, initiated a meeting with 15 Israeli businessmen
(in industry, real estate, services etc) living in Montreal on April 21st. The Consul General, Mark Attali,
