Greetings,

The project “Shake Hands with Israeli Industry”, initiated by the Israel Canada Chamber of Commerce, generated a great deal of interest amongst Israeli companies, many of which requested to participate.  Adv. Yehuda Raveh, the President of the Chamber, visited Canada in December.  He met with Canadian businessmen and convinced them to support the project by recruiting volunteers to assist Israeli companies. The project will consist of two tracks: the first - to distribute the profile of the company to a list of Canadian businessmen who have expressed an interest in assisting Israeli companies; the second track - to find a volunteer contact person to escort the Israeli company for a period of time. The project will be publicized in Canada in January in order to find volunteers.

A New Government in Canada.

Paul Martin announced the composition of his government on December 13, 2003.  For information about the new government and its cabinet members press here.  The Government’s new Justice Minister is Professor Irvin Cutler, a dedicated Jew and committed supporter of Israel.  We hope that he can facilitate an improvement in Canadian-Israel relations.

According to reports in the Israeli press cooperation between Israeli and Canadian companies is growing.  Israeli investment in revenue producing Canadian real estate has been increasing and makes Israel a major player in the Canadian real estate market.

Happy New Year and Pleasant Reading,

Amos Cohen,
Director of the Chamber of Commerce

Report on Israel Tourism Activities

Pledge Card Campaign: “I Care and I’m Going” This was the declaration that greeted Jewish Canadians in more than 100 of the 120 synagogues of all streams of Judaism across Canada during the High Holidays. Rabbis also encouraged their congregants to support Israel by visiting Israel during the coming year. Since the campaign began, the pledge cards have been filling the mailbox at the Israel Government Tourist Office in Toronto.

The Ministry of Tourism recently hosted a journalist from the Toronto Star, Vivian McDonald, who has already written two very positive articles on tourism to Israel. An additional journalist was hosted at the Dead Sea Marketing Weekend (Nov. 20-24) which highlighted the tourism products available at the “lowest spot on earth”. Three Canadian journalists from newspapers across Canada were hosted in early December. These are all part of the on-going efforts of the Israel Government Tourist Office (IGTO) and the Ministry of Tourism to provide exposure for the Israeli tourism industry in the Canadian media.

IGTO Canada has been working closely with evangelical Christian organizations in Canada to encourage Canadian Christians to visit Israel. As a result, 2000 Canadian Christians are planning a major gathering in Israel in March 2004 under the banner “Israel - You Are Not Alone”.

Tourism to Israel has started to rebound from all over the world, with 944,000 arrivals between January and November 2003, an increase of 23% over the same period in 2002 and already more than the total for 2002 – 862,000. The 'millionth tourist' mark was reached earlier in December. Tourism from Canada was also up by an impressive 22% over the January-November 2002 period, with 26,400 arrivals.

Canadian Activities and Successes:

Israel is one of Canada's largest and most diversified export markets in the Middle East, and the only country in the region with which Canada has a free trade agreement. Canada’s trade with Israel has more than doubled since the start of the Canada-Israel Free Trade Agreement (CIFTA) in 1997. In fact, in 2002 two-way trade reached $1 billion for the first time ever, and Canadian exports were close to $400 million. Negotiations were recently successfully concluded to expand the CIFTA, which opens up market opportunities for Canadian exporters in a wide range of agricultural, and agri-food products. For more information on new market opportunities in the Israeli agricultural and agri-food market, please contact Mona Mansour-Ashkar at: mona.mansour-ashkar@dfait-maeci.gc.ca

Nortel Networks in Israel was recently awarded $US93 M contract for GSM operator Partner Communication's 3G Wireless Network, the first in Israel. Nortel beat Nokia, Ericsson and a joint group comprising Siemens and NEC of Japan for the deal.

Bombardier and Aecon are part of four consortia that passed the preliminary screening stage for the Tel Aviv Light Railway Project. The $US 1.5B BOT (Build, Operate, Transfer) project will be the country's largest infrastructure project in coming years.
