What’s New

 

On the July 22nd  Chamber board meeting, we met with Mr. Alan Becker, the Attorney General for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who will be replacing the Israeli ambassador in Canada, Mr. Haim Divon, in the fall. The meeting also included a review on Canadian tourism and the Ministry of Tourism’s promotions in that field, by Mr. Ari Marom, head of the North American desk. In addition, it was decided that an event will be held in January 2005, saluting the companies active in promoting commerce between Israel and Canada.

 

Suzanne Szukits, Canada’s economic attaché in Israel, ended her term at the end of July and is being replaced by Rene Wassill. The chamber would like to thank Suzanne for her cooperation. 

 

Canada Day was marked by a festive reception organized by Donald Sinclair,  Canadian ambassador to Israel.

 

New Sector Profiles for the Israeli Biotechnology, Plastics, Construction, Medical Devices and Agri-food Industries and a new Market Study on the Israeli ICT market are now available on www.infoexport.gc.ca

 

There is an upcoming tender for onshore gas pipeline in Israel. The tender is for a Natural Gas Distribution Turnkey Project for building onshore gas pipeline. The first stage is for $US80M ($US300M overall). The gas will be used to power large industries.  The tender is divided into two: Equipment and Construction. Pelephone, the 3rd largest Israeli cellular provider, selected Nortel Networks to provide mobile broadband equipment for its third generation (3G) wireless network.

 

 Bombardier opened an Israeli office in Tel Aviv with a reception jointly hosted by the Canadian Embassy.  Israel Railways has contracted with Bombardier for the supply of 23 railway cars.

Leonard Asper, president of Canwest Company, organized a reception in my honor. Canwest Company is one of the largest Canadian communication companies. It owns various newspapers and television stations and currently a contender for acquisition of the Jerusalem Post. The event took place at the Fairmont hotel. Amongst the 60 guests were Jewish community leaders as well as business, government, industry, science and academic figures.

 

Manitoba Meeting with Heads of the Ministry of Trade
I met with both vice president of the Ministry, Diana Gray, and her staff and then with another senior official, Bob Dilay. We agreed on giving priority to the promotion of commerce and industrial cooperation with Israel. In addition, Diane accepted my invitation to visit Israel this year (either with the Jewish Federation delegation or in the framework of Telecom 2004).

 

 

Meeting with British Columbia’s Minister of Trade & Industry, John Les
We offered to supply the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver with security and communication services (amongst other things) as those supplied by Israeli companies for the Olympics in Athens. Our offer was gladly accepted and a liaison was chosen to further handle this matter. In discussing the future of our technological cooperation, the Minister expressed his interest in promoting the field of biotechnology.

 

 

MacDonald Dettweiler Meeting Update (www.mda.ca)
I visited MacDonald Dettweiler, one of the leading Canadian companies in the field of defense and space. The company is comprised of 2600 employees. It recently committed to a multi-million dollar procurement from Israel in return for a deal made with the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

 

 

Meeting with William (Bill) Levine, President of Western Corporate Enterprises, Inc.
We met with Bill Levine, president of Western Corporate Enterprises Inc. and owner of 630 W&A restaurants in Canada. At my suggestion, Bill has agreed to consider the possibility of buying Israeli food products and restaurant equipment. In addition, Bill recommended other Canadian companies that might be interested in buying Israeli products and he has agreed to help make contact with them.

 

Exhibitions and Events

 

SIAL 2004 October 17-21 2004 is the world's largest food & beverages tradeshow. This is an international showcase representing many industries in the food market with more than 5200 exhibitors from 98 countries. A large number of Israeli companies will be attending this event. Telecom Israel 2004, www.telecom-israel.com

The Telecom Israel Conference and Exhibition is an international event where over 200 of Israel's leading telecom players, developers and service providers will be participating, including Nortel Networks Israel; a professional interdisciplinary conference by leaders in the world telecommunications community.

International Trade Canada will have a presence and is recruiting Canadian companies to co-share booth and attend. Deadline: September 1, 2004

Headlines from Israeli Newspapers

The Israeli startup company, Sentacom, which develops information security applications for organizations and the Internet, is in the advanced stages of negotiations for being sold to the Canadian company, WatchFire (Globes, July 7)

 

The Canadian plastics manufacturer, Hershy Friedman from Montreal, is the main investor in Stoga, a company that holds 40% of the Be’eri Towers Company that has projects in Tel-Aviv and Warsaw (Globes, July 5)

 

An American bank will invest 19 million Canadian dollars in Angel Group projects in Canada (Globes, July 5)

 

There was an increase of 15% in the export of Kibbutz manufactured goods between January and May. Export to North America increased 13.5% reaching 170 million dollars (Globes, June 30)

 

El-Al is offering its pilots to move to Toronto with their families for the summer months at the company’s expense, in order to facilitate their work on the LA-Toronto-Tel Aviv route. (Yediot Aharonot, June 23)

 

The Tolgal Company, owned by Kibbutz Dgania Aleph, has invested $500,000 to create a partnership in Montreal. The factory manufactures cables for cutting granite, stone and cement. The company foresees sales in Canada  reaching 2 million dollars by the end of 2005 (Globes, July 2)

 

The Canadian company, Sky Service, has started operating weekly charter flights between Toronto and Tel-Aviv using a Boeing 757 with a stopover in Dublin, Ireland (Haaretz, June 24)

 

Gilboa Instruments Industry, a new plastic mould processing company, opened in Moshav Magen Shaul in the Ta’anach region. It was founded by Canadian Christian families living there. The company has 45 employees and is expected to reach 150 employees. The company is an expansion of the Canadian factory owned by the Christian community (The Galilee Valley, June 22)

 

10 apartments in the City Tower Hotel have been sold to American and Canadian buyers for the total price of 2.2 million dollars (Globes, June 17)

 

Electra Real estate is buying 49% of two office buildings in Toronto for the price of 56 million NIS (Globes, July 15)

 

“Jerusalem Calcalit”, controlled by Eliaz Fishman, purchased a commercial center in Canada for 18 million dollars (Yediot Aharonot, June 14)

 

The Canadian police arrested 3 Israeli citizens suspected of forging credit cards of HSBC bank customers (Yediot Aharonot, June 9)

www.israeliconsumerproducts.com is a website promoting Israeli products in Canada. The website lists the addresses of stores selling Israeli goods throughout Canada according to the type of product. Listing on the site is free of charge.
